Techniques for applying highlighting & lowlighting styles for your own custom look

Tips

1

The Precision Applicator holds enough formula to color a full strand of hair, or one complete accent from top to bottom. Refill the applicator each time you apply an accent to ensure complete and even coverage.

2

When applying formula, place the applicator about a half inch from the root area and, using a single continuous movement, slowly stroke the applicator from the top to the end of your hair.

3

The fully blended highlight formula is blue in color, and the lowlight formula is brown in color to help you see where your lowlights will appear. It is not the color of your accent!

4

You can also use lowlights to correct over-lightened hair or blend away strands of gray hair.

Face Framing

Face Framing

Apply the formula on a few strands around your face and bangs, if you have them. This style is highly recommended for short hairstyles, thin or fine hair, as the technique ensures you achieve an accented, multi-dimensional look without applying too much product.

All Over Surface Accents

All Over Surface Accents

Apply formula to sections across the surface of your hair, following its natural flow. Start with strands at the back of your head, and gradually work your way toward the front. Use a hand mirror or ask a friend to help you with the back of your head.

Layered Look

Layered Look

Use plastic clips to lift and hold the top layers of your hair while you apply the formula underneath, starting a half-inch away from the roots. Begin with the bottom layer, applying as many accents as you like. Then resection by taking down another layer of your hair, and then apply more accents with the formula. Repeat for each successive layer, from bottom to top.

Shadowing

Shadowing (Lowlights only)

Use plastic clips to lift and hold the top layers of your hair while you apply lowlights underneath. Begin with the bottom layer. Holding the Precision Applicator horizontally, comb the mixture onto this lower layer to saturate all hair strands. To prevent color from touching the upper layer, cover the lower layer of hair with a piece of aluminum foil while the color processes.
